A tuner is the first thing a guitarist needs. We compare the clip-on tuner, pedalboard tuner and mobile app so you know what to buy first.
Clip-On vs. Pedalboard Tuner – Which to Choose?

Why the Type of Tuner Matters

An out-of-tune guitar is either a tragedy or a comedy – depending on the audience's point of view. Tuners exist in many forms today and each one performs best in a different situation. We'll walk through three main types – and at the end tell you what to buy first.

Clip-On Tuner – Quiet, Reliable, Always at Hand

The clip-on tuner attaches directly to the headstock and detects wood vibrations – not sound through a microphone. That's its key advantage: it works even in noisy environments, like backstage before a concert or in a room full of people tuning at the same time.

A great choice for beginners is the Revoltage series – for example the Revoltage CLT-1 (standard battery, around €10) or the Revoltage CLT-5 with USB charging if you don't want to deal with batteries. Both have a rotatable colour display and ±1 cent accuracy. Proven alternatives include the Korg PC-2, Snark SN-5X or D'Addario NS Micro.

Ideal for: acoustic and classical guitar, beginners, home practice, concerts in quieter environments.
MUZIKERTIP: If you're not sure which clip-on tuner to pick, go for the Revoltage CLT-1 or CLT-5 – quality, reliable and at a sensible price. Exactly what a beginner needs.

Pedalboard Tuner – for the Stage and Pedalboard

The pedalboard tuner (e.g. Boss TU-3, TC Electronic Polytune 3 or Korg Pitchblack+) is connected in the signal chain between the guitar and the amp. When you stomp it, it mutes the output – you can tune on stage without the audience hearing out-of-tune sounds.

The TC Electronic Polytune 3 goes even further: with a single strum it checks all 6 strings at once and immediately shows which one is out of tune.

Pedalboard tuners cost between €50 and €100.

Ideal for: electric guitar, pedalboard players, live performances.

Mobile App – Free Backup Option

Apps like GuitarTuna or Fender Tune are free, installed in 30 seconds and use the phone's microphone. They work great in a quiet room – in noise they fail because they pick up all surrounding sounds.

Use them as an emergency backup or as a first tool for your very first days of playing.

So What Should You Buy?

If you're a beginner or mostly play at home – a clip-on tuner is everything you need. We recommend the Revoltage CLT-1 as the entry-level model or the Revoltage CLT-5 with USB charging if you prefer rechargeable – both are affordable, reliable and clip onto any guitar in a second.

When you later put together a pedalboard, a pedal tuner will naturally join the setup. Until then, the clip-on is more than enough.
