Bb Trumpets

The Bb trumpet is the most common tuning for music education, brass bands, jazz and popular music. It sounds a whole tone lower than the written note, which you must take into account when playing with a piano. Your first instrument should have free-moving valves, airtight tuning slides and a mouthpiece that does not create excessive resistance.

The bore and bell change the feel

A wider bore may require more air, while a smaller one may feel more compact. The figure alone does not predict the tone without the context of the bell and mouthpiece. Choose a student model according to its easy response and stable intonation in the middle register.

Check the valves in combinations

Press 1–2, 2–3 and all three, and check that they return quickly. The pistons must be in the correct casings and orientation. The third tuning slide should allow you to adjust the tuning of low notes without straining your hand.

The mouthpiece should suit you, not the price of the instrument

An overly large cup will tire your embouchure, while a very narrow rim may cause pressure. Start with the size recommended by your teacher and change only one parameter at a time. You will find differences between related instruments among trumpets, cornets and flugelhorns.

A slide is a different method of intonation

If you prefer changing positions continuously instead of using valves, see trombones. The Bb designation is used for both, but their technique and playing position differ.

Drain condensation without turning the instrument over people

The water keys must seal, and the spring should close them when released. After rehearsing, wipe the exterior, remove the mouthpiece and let the trumpet air briefly before closing the case.

Choose a Bb trumpet according to its response in the middle register, valve action and tuning-slide ergonomics.
