Wind instruments, or woodwinds, are among the most popular musical instruments. This category contains a large number of instruments designed for both experienced and less experienced musicians. We will introduce them individually and help you with your choice.

Wind instruments are divided into:woodwind, brass and polyphonic. This division is derived from the materials from which the instruments were made, but nowadays, we can also encounter other materials.

Woodwind Instruments

Woodwind instruments are divided into single-reed, double-reed and flutes. Nowadays, we can also encounter materials such as metal or plastic.

• Single-reed Instruments – saxophone and clarinet
• Double-reed Instruments – oboe, cor anglais, bassoon and contrabassoon
• Flutes – Recorders and Transverse Flutes, as well as Piccolos

Brass Instruments

Brass instruments are most often made of brass.

• trumpets, cornets and flugelhorns, trombones, tubas and sousaphones, euphoniums, French horns, tenor and baritone horns

Polyphonic Wind Instruments

We divide polyphonic instruments into two basic groups, namely:

• without keyboard - harmonica
• with keyboard - harmonium, bagpipes or even an organ.

Saxophone and Clarinet

The Clarinet was created in the 17th century, when it also achieved its greatest fame. Its application is diverse thanks to its versatile expression and broad range (almost 4 octaves). It is used in almost all genres, whether folk music, wind music, dance or symphonic work.

The Saxophone is the successor to the clarinet. It was created in 1840 and, despite its smaller range, gained great popularity. It is particularly useful in jazz, brass bands and rock. Due to the relatively limited range, there are several variants: soprano, alto, baritone and tenor saxophone.

The Oboe was particularly popular in Baroque music, but it also had a significant position in Classicism and Romanticism. The modern oboe is tuned, like the transverse flute, in C.

Flute

The Recorder is often a musician's first instrument. It is suitable for all ages because it does not have complex fingering, and the advantage is its low purchase price. The soprano flute is most often the first choice.

Today, the Transverse Flute is made mainly out of metal. Playing it is considerably more complicated than playing the recorder and requires a different blowing technique. It is often part of a chamber or symphony orchestra.

Brass Instruments

The Trumpet is one of the oldest musical instruments of all. The most well-known types of are Bb trumpets and C trumpets. The flugelhorn and cornet have a different width and bend of the tube compared to the trumpet.

The Trombone is one of the oldest instruments made of metal. It is widely used not only in orchestras, but also in quartets, quintets and jazz. Currently, alto, tenor and bass trombones are produced.

The Tuba was created as the last in the group of brass wind instruments for orchestral purposes. It has found application in various musical genres. Nowadays, tubas of various sizes and tunings are used - B, C, Eb, F. The sousaphone matches the tuba in range.

The  Euphonium most closely resembles a tuba. Its basic tuning is in B. The instrument is an integral part of the symphony orchestra.

The French Horn, like other hunting horns, has been associated with hunting wild game since time immemorial. However, it quickly found its application in ceremonies and various types of musical events.
