Zoom H5 Portable Digital Recorder

Zoom H5 Portable Recorder — Four-Track Field Audio Capture

The Zoom H5 portable recorder delivers four simultaneous tracks of high-resolution audio in a compact handheld format. Built for documentary work, podcasting, and audio-for-video production, this model pairs a swappable stereo microphone capsule with preamps borrowed from Zoom's flagship H6. It is the right choice for creators who need flexible, multi-source recording without the bulk of a full studio rig.

What Sets This Recorder Apart

The interchangeable capsule system defines this model — the included XYH-5 X/Y capsule swaps out for shotgun, mid-side, or dual XLR capsules as easily as changing a camera lens. A Backup-Record function captures a duplicate stereo track at -12 dB, protecting against clipping during unpredictable live takes. Rubberized housing and shock-mounted microphones minimize handling noise, while a low-cut filter eliminates wind rumble in outdoor environments.

Recording Performance and Connectivity

The recording engine supports WAV, BWF, and MP3 formats at sample rates from 44.1 kHz up to 96 kHz with 16 or 24-bit depth. Storage runs through SD or SDHC cards, and the four-track architecture allows simultaneous capture from the stereo capsule plus two external sources.

Who Should Choose This Recorder

This recorder is the right choice for field recordists, podcasters, videographers, and musicians who need a portable unit that adapts to changing scenarios. Documentary crews benefit from the Backup-Record safety track and 140 dB SPL handling in loud environments. Musicians appreciate the dual XLR/TRS combo inputs for microphones, line-level signals, or direct keyboard connections. DSLR videographers can route audio to the camera while monitoring through headphones. Beginners find the menu approachable; experienced users get the preamp quality and capsule flexibility that justify the price at this tier.
