Mohair Yarn

Mohair yarn is light and fluffy, spun from the hair of the Angora goat, with a characteristic fine halo. The range includes Alize Kid Royal, Austermann Kid Silk, Malabrigo Mohair, Schachenmayr Pebble Mohair and Yarn Art Bellissimo or Mohair Trendy. Mohair keeps you warm even in a thin knit and gives a sweater, scarf or hat a soft, slightly hazy surface. You can knit it on its own or hold it together with another yarn to give that yarn more volume.

What are kid mohair and silk mohair?

Kid mohair comes from the first shearings of young goats and is finer than mohair from adult animals. Alize Kid Royal combines kid mohair with polyamide, which strengthens the fibre.

Austermann Kid Silk and Malabrigo Mohair have a silk core wrapped in mohair. The yarn is thin, light and has a subtle sheen, so it suits airy scarves and wraps.

Schachenmayr Pebble Mohair, Yarn Art Mohair Trendy, Bellissimo and Alize 3 Season blend mohair with wool or acrylic. They are thicker and are knitted on larger needles.

What needle size do you need for mohair yarn?

The thin silk mohair Austermann Kid Silk is knitted on 3 to 4 mm needles, Malabrigo Mohair on 3.25 to 5 mm. Alize Kid Royal covers 2 to 6 mm – on larger needles it turns into an airy, see-through fabric. Pebble Mohair from Schachenmayr needs 5.5 to 6 mm needles. When you knit mohair together with another yarn, choose the needles based on the thickness of both strands combined.

Mohair is hard to unravel because the fibres catch on each other, so try out the pattern on a small swatch first. You will find other warm, soft yarns among our alpaca yarn and the full knitting range in the knitting yarn category.
