Modelling, MIDI and USB Guitars
Modeling, MIDI and USB guitars combine the classic electric guitar with digital technology. A modeling guitar can emulate the sound of different guitar types, a MIDI guitar sends data about the notes you play to software or a synthesizer, and a USB model connects directly to a computer or mobile device. When choosing, therefore, do not begin with the body shape, but with what you want to do with the guitar: play live, record at home or control virtual instruments.
Modeling, MIDI or USB?
| Type | Best suited to | What to bear in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Modeling guitar (e.g. Line6 Variax) | Changing the instrument’s sound quickly without switching guitars | The electronics and their settings have a major influence on the sound character |
| MIDI guitar (e.g. AeroBand) | Controlling virtual instruments and synthesizers | You need software or a device that can process MIDI data |
| Smart and USB guitar (e.g. MOOER, Lava Music) | Practising and recording directly via a computer or mobile device | Compatibility with the app and the device to which you connect it |
What to check before choosing
- The connection method: USB, MIDI or a standard jack, or several options at once.
- The software or app the guitar uses and whether it supports your computer or phone.
- The power supply, as some models require a battery or mains adapter.
- The response when playing through a computer, which is important when recording.
- Portability and whether a case is included.
If a conventional instrument without additional electronics is enough for you, see electric guitars or the overview of all electric guitar body shapes. For a mellower character, you can consider semi-acoustic guitars, and if you are looking for a distinctive appearance, explore unconventional body shapes.
