Megadeth is an American thrash metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1983 by guitarist and vocalist Dave Mustaine. Renowned for fast tempos, complex guitar work, and powerful lyrics, Megadeth is considered one of the "big four" bands that defined American thrash metal, alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. Their music combines technical musicianship with themes of war, politics, and personal struggle. The band released their debut album, Killing Is My Business and Business Is Good in 1985, followed by Peace Sells but Who's Buying, which helped establish their reputation in the metal underground. Throughout their career, Megadeth has released several platinum albums, including Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction, and has performed on global tours. Although the band has seen many lineup changes, Dave Mustaine has remained its driving force. Megadeth has earned multiple Grammy nominations and won their first in 2017 for the song Dystopia. Their mascot, Vic Rattlehead, is a frequent figure in their artwork and concerts. As of 2023, Megadeth has sold over fifty million albums worldwide, released sixteen studio records, and continues to be a major influence in heavy metal.
