Mechanical sewing machine or computerised sewing machine?

You control a mechanical sewing machine with dials and can see your settings straight away. It's enough if you mainly use straight stitch, zigzag stitch, a stretch stitch for knit fabrics and buttonholes. A computerised sewing machine has a display, dozens to hundreds of stitches and decorative programmes; some also offer automatic thread cutting or embroidery. How many stitches and which presser feet do you need?

The mechanical machines on this page range from 9 stitches (Singer Promise 1409) to 36 stitches (Minerva LaVento 770LV and M832B). You can adjust the stitch length on every model and the stitch width on almost all of them. Most have a zip foot and can also sew with a twin needle, which lets you topstitch a hem on knit fabric with two parallel rows of stitching. Which machine can handle denim and thick fabrics?

Heavy Duty machines, such as Singer HD6335M Denim and Minerva HS1000, suit jeans, canvas or several layers of fabric. Minerva HS1000 and Texi Bro, Force and Gold all have a 100 W motor. Fit a thicker needle for thick fabric and sew more slowly. You can neaten fabric edges with a zigzag stitch, but for an edge finish like the one on a shop-bought T-shirt, you'll need an overlocker.
