Macrame cord

Macrame cord is twisted cord and rope that you knot into plant hangers, wall hangings, dreamcatchers or garlands. On this page you'll find Bobbiny Macramé Cord and the three-strand Bobbiny 3PLY Macramé Rope in thicknesses from 1.5 to 9 mm, plus Yarn Art Macrame Rope in 3 and 5 mm and Yarn Art Twisted Macrame on large skeins. Bobbiny cords are mostly made of recycled cotton, while Yarn Art blends cotton with viscose and polyester. Each range comes in dozens of colours, from natural beiges to bold shades.

Which macrame cord thickness should you choose?

The thickness decides how big and how striking the finished piece will be. A 1.5 mm cord suits small ornaments, pendants and delicate patterns with lots of tiny knots. With 3 mm you can tie most plant hangers and smaller wall hangings. Cords of 5 mm and 9 mm create large, sculptural knots for oversized wall hangings or hangers for heavier pots. The thicker the cord, the fewer knots you need to cover the same area and the faster your piece is done.

Twisted cord, three-strand rope or braided cord?

Twisted cord is soft and its ends brush out easily into fluffy fringes, which makes it a good fit for wall hangings with fringes. Three-strand rope is firmer, the knots show a pronounced texture and the piece holds its shape better. Braided cords don't unravel and are mostly used for crocheted bags – you'll find them on the Bag Yarn page. All cords, braided ones included, are together in the Cords category.

How many metres of cord come in one pack?

Bobbiny Macramé Cord and 3PLY Macramé Rope are sold on spools of 30 to 100 m depending on the thickness. Yarn Art Macrame Rope has 63 or 85 m per pack and Yarn Art Twisted Macrame 190 to 210 m on a skein weighing 250 or 500 g. Knots use up several times the length of the finished piece, so for a large wall hanging it pays to take a longer spool or several packs in the same colour.
