Flute Stands

Flute stands hold your flute safely upright when you put it down for a moment during a rehearsal, concert or practice session. You place the flute over a peg, so it does not rest on a chair or desk where it could roll off. Which flute stands should you choose?

• Stand that fits inside the foot joint – a small stand that folds up to fit directly inside the flute's foot joint, so you can carry it in the case. Hercules DS460 and DS461B work this way, with DS461B designed for a flute with a B foot.
• Folding stand with a peg – a stand for one flute with folding legs, such as König & Meyer 15232 with four cast zinc legs. Stagg WIS-A45 and Hercules DS640BB can hold a flute or a clarinet.
• Stand for several instruments – Hercules DS543BB has two pegs for flutes or clarinets and a separate peg for a piccolo. The Hercules DS538B saxophone stand holds two flutes or clarinets in addition to two saxophones.
• Alto flute stand – Hercules DS562BB has a removable peg with a foam covering. By purchasing additional pegs, you can extend it to hold two more instruments.

What should you look for when buying a flute stand?

First, check which instrument the stand is designed for. Flutes, piccolos and alto flutes have different diameters, so their pegs differ too. If the stand folds up to fit inside the foot joint, you also need to check whether your flute has a C foot or a B foot.

If you switch between several instruments, a multi-instrument stand saves space. For travel, a lightweight folding stand that fits in your case is a useful choice. A velvet or foam surface on the peg protects the inside of the instrument from scratches, and you can add the separate Hercules DS602B peg to a compatible stand.
