David Sylvian, born in 1958, is an English musician and songwriter best known as the frontman of the influential band Japan, which played a major role in shaping the UK's early 1980s new wave scene with their androgynous image and electronic sound. After Japan disbanded, Sylvian launched a critically acclaimed solo career beginning with his 1984 album Brilliant Trees. Noted for his rich baritone voice and distinctive songwriting, he has worked with artists like Ryuichi Sakamoto and Robert Fripp. Sylvian's music blends art rock, pop, jazz fusion, and ambient experimentalism, and in recent years his work has explored minimalism and free improvisation.
