Blue Oyster Cult is an influential American rock band formed in Stony Brook, New York, in 1967. Famed for blending hard rock and psychedelia with lyrics exploring the occult, science fiction, and dark humor, the group helped shape the heavy metal genre. They gained both a devoted fan base and major mainstream success in the 1970s and early 1980s with hits like Dont Fear The Reaper, Godzilla, and Burnin for You, all of which remain classic rock staples. Known for their early use of music videos and innovative style, Blue Oyster Cult sold over 25 million records worldwide. Despite changing musical trends and lineup shifts, core members Eric Bloom and Donald Buck Dharma Roeser have kept the band active for decades, releasing new material into the 2020s with albums such as The Symbol Remains and Ghost Stories. Their creative partnership with manager Sandy Pearlman and rock critic Richard Meltzer contributed to the band’s distinctive lyrical style.
