Alto saxophone cases and bags: hard case or soft bag?

A hard case is useful when your saxophone travels in a car boot, on a bus or alongside other luggage. BAM Cabine 4011SNN has an ABS shell and a dense polyurethane foam interior that also protects against sudden changes in temperature. Latone Saxo Melody Guard is made from carbon fibre and, according to the manufacturer, is 30 % lighter than conventional hard cases. SKB 1SKB-440 and the ABS Jakob Winter 2192 have space inside for the neck and mouthpiece.

A soft bag is lighter for everyday carrying. Latone LASC V1 is a lightweight padded bag for lessons and rehearsals. SKB 1SKB-SC340 has the same foam padding as SKB hard cases, a nylon exterior and an adjustable shoulder strap. Will your alto saxophone fit in a shaped case?

BAM Cabine, Softpack and Trekking cases have interiors shaped to fit the Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone. BAM Hightech 4120XL also has room for a Selmer Série III soprano saxophone with a detachable neck, so you can carry both instruments in one case.
