Tube Guitar Combos
A valve combo uses vacuum tubes in its amplifier, giving the tone a warm character and a sensitive response to how strongly you strike the strings. As you increase the volume, the sound naturally overdrives, which is why guitarists choose it for blues, rock and jazz. Do not base your choice solely on price; consider output power, speaker size and where you will use it.
How many watts do you need?
| Use | What to consider | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Home playing and recording | Low output power and an option to reduce volume | Valve character is most apparent at higher volume, so look for models with power attenuation |
| Rehearsal room | Medium output power and a speaker of sufficient diameter | With live drums, you need enough headroom to be heard alongside the other instruments |
| Stage and studio | Higher output power, quality connections and possibly a speaker-cabinet output | Greater cabinet weight and dimensions |
What affects the combo's tone
Besides the number and type of valves, the speaker's size and type, cabinet construction, number of channels and equaliser all affect the sound. Check whether the combo has separate channels for clean and overdriven sounds, reverb or an effects loop. Also distinguish between preamp valves, which shape the character of the sound, and power valves, which determine the output and behaviour at higher volume. You will find details of the valves used in each model's specifications. With smaller models popular for practice, it is also worth checking for a headphone output or line out.
Valve maintenance
Valves wear out and must be replaced after a certain period. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when replacing them, particularly regarding valve type and bias adjustment. Never switch on a valve amplifier without a speaker connected, as this can damage it. Transport a valve combo carefully because valves are more sensitive to impact than solid-state components.
What else to compare
If you do not want to maintain valves, browse solid-state combos. Hybrid combos combine both approaches, while modelling combos provide a broad selection of sounds and effects. Mini combos suit playing at home and while travelling. You will find an overview of all types in the guitar combos category, and the guide on how to choose a guitar amplifier can also help.
