Tailor's Tape Measures

A tailor's measuring tape measures circumferences and curves that are difficult to follow with a rigid ruler. It must be flexible, easy to read, and dimensionally stable. A stretched or kinked tape transfers errors into the entire pattern. Compare it with a rigid measuring tool before a precise project.

Measuring the body without tightening

Let the tape fit closely without pulling it into the skin. Keep it level when measuring the waist, chest, or hips. The person being measured should stand naturally, and you should record the value immediately. Use the same reference point for repeated measurements.

Garments, patterns, and finished items

  • A soft tape follows the body and curved objects.
  • A retractable tape stores quickly, but its mechanism must not alter the start of the scale.
  • A rigid ruler remains more suitable for straight lines and seam allowances.

Related sewing tools

Measuring is part of the broader Sewing / Embroidery category. After transferring the measurement, you need a suitable marking tool and equipment from Sewing Tools; Threads hold the seam itself together.

Do not kink the tape

Roll the tape loosely or let its mechanism retract it. Protect it from heat and sharp objects. Replace it if the scale wears off or the tape stretches.
