Pan Flutes

Panpipes create a melody using a set of pipes of different lengths; you move the instrument along your lips and blow across the top edges. The number of pipes determines the range, the tuning determines how you can play with other instruments, and the curvature affects your reach. Your first model should allow you to cover the entire range without twisting your wrist.

Straight or curved arrangement

A curved arrangement brings the outer pipes closer to your mouth and makes movement easier across a wider range. A straight panpipe may suit a smaller model or a particular traditional technique. Also check the direction in which the notes are arranged, because Romanian and South American designs may not use the same system.

Range and key

A smaller range is sufficient for simple solo melodies, while an ensemble or more demanding repertoire requires more pipes and chromatic options. An instrument marked with a specific key is easier to combine with a guitar or piano. You still adjust pitch accuracy through the angle of your airstream.

Material and sensitivity to moisture

Bamboo and wood react to the climate, so do not leave them near a heater or in a wet case. Plastic models are easier to maintain. Panpipes require a different technique from recorders; you can find other traditional aerophones among ethnic whistles.

Choose a range that you can comfortably reach and tuning that fits the instruments you play with.
