Overlocks / Coverlocks

Overlock and coverlock machines handle different aspects of sewing stretch fabrics. An overlock joins and finishes an edge, often trimming the excess at the same time. A coverlock creates a cover stitch on hems that appears as parallel lines from the right side. A combination machine offers both functions but must be converted between them.

Overlock for a clean edge

Differential feed helps reduce rippling in knits or, conversely, create gathers. The number of threads changes the strength and appearance of the stitch. Use the knife only where you genuinely want to trim the edge; you may be able to disengage it during testing if the design allows.

Coverlock for a stretch hem

A cover stitch is suitable for the lower edges of T-shirts, sleeves, and other areas that need to stretch. Stitch width, a free arm, and easy material guidance are important. Smooth out the seam allowance and make a test on the same layers of knit fabric before hemming.

Separate or combination solution

  • Two machines save conversion time when frequently switching between operations.
  • A combination model saves space but requires rethreading and adjustment.
  • A regular sewing machine is still needed for straight stitching, zippers, and many construction operations.

You can find a wider selection under Sewing Machines and Accessories; Sewing Machine Presser Feet provide more options for guiding specific fabrics.

Cleaning fabric trimmings

Regularly remove fibers from the looper and knife area. Replace needles with the exact system specified in the manual. Oil and service only at the points and intervals recommended by the manufacturer.
