Modelling Guitar Combos

A modelling combo uses digital sound processing to simulate different amplifiers, speaker cabinets and effects. This gives you more tonal characters in a single unit than you would get from a conventional combo of a similar size. It is suitable for home practice, recording and rehearsals, particularly if you want to switch quickly between clean, crunch and heavily distorted sounds. The range includes models from brands such as Boss, Fender, Joyo, Marshall and Positive Grid.

What to consider when choosing

Use	What to consider	What to expect
Home practice	Lower power, headphone output, Bluetooth or aux input	Smaller models have limited volume and bass response
Rehearsal room	Higher power and a larger speaker	You need sufficient power headroom when playing with live drums
Recording	USB output or an output for an interface, speaker cabinet simulation	Check compatibility with your software
Playing with effects	Number of built-in effects and the option to connect a foot controller	Operation through a menu or app

What to check before buying

The number and type of amplifier and effect simulations.
The option to save your own settings as presets.
Whether it has an effects loop or built-in looper.
Connection to a phone or computer for editing sounds.
Footswitch control, if you need it.

Presets, apps and choosing sounds

Most modelling combos allow you to save favourite settings, so you can switch quickly between sounds at rehearsal or on stage. Some models can be controlled through an app on your phone or computer, making it easier to edit sounds and share presets. If you do not want to spend time navigating menus, choose a model with straightforward controls and a clear panel. For a beginner, it is important that the basic controls are readily accessible.

Other types of combo

If you prefer a warm analogue tone, explore valve combos. For simple and reliable playing, consider solid-state combos, or choose hybrid combos if you want to combine both approaches. Mini combos provide a small, portable solution. If you are interested in Boss Katana amplifiers, read which BOSS Katana amplifier is right for you.
