Lyres

A wind instrument lyre is a small music holder attached directly to a clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone or another compatible instrument. It keeps sheet music in the player's line of sight where a conventional music stand would not be practical. It is mainly used when playing while standing, in a parade or while marching. The mounting method must suit the instrument and must not obstruct fingers or controls.

Compatibility matters more than appearance

Check which instrument and mounting point the lyre is designed for. Models for clarinet, saxophone, trumpet or trombone may differ in shape, arm length and clamping section. The music clip should hold the paper firmly, while the arm should provide a readable angle without blocking your view.

Practical checks before playing

  • Attach the lyre according to the manufacturer's instructions and check that it does not loosen as you move.
  • Position the music so you do not have to lower your head significantly.
  • Use a paper size that the clip can hold securely while walking or playing outdoors.
  • Before transport, remove the lyre or store it so the arm and clamp do not bend.
