Hunting Horns

A hunting horn may be a natural brass instrument without valves or a compact signal horn intended for agreed calls. Its range is produced by harmonics and your lip technique, not by chromatic fingering. Before choosing, decide whether you need a musical instrument for tradition or a practical signalling device.

The tuning determines the available notes

A natural horn plays the notes of a single harmonic series, so choose the key according to your ensemble and repertoire. An instrument without valves cannot play a chromatic scale in the same way as a French horn. Check the designation and tubing length before playing with others.

The mouthpiece shank must fit

The width of the rim and cup changes both resistance and comfort. Do not use a mouthpiece from another instrument merely because you can partially insert it. A loose joint damages the shank and impairs the seal.

The material affects weight and maintenance

Brass needs to be dried and its interior cleaned regularly, while plastic may be lighter for outdoor use. The finish does not change the basic range. When carrying it, use a case that protects the circular tubing from dents.

A different instrument provides the bass voice in a marching band

If you need a low foundation in a marching band, see tubas and sousaphones. A hunting horn is used primarily for signals and traditional fanfares, so do not compare it solely by volume.

Signals must be agreed in advance

In practical use, what matters is not the number of notes but the clarity of the call and the rules of the particular organisation. Do not use the instrument as a noisy toy; point the bell in a safe direction and respect the hearing of people and animals nearby.

Choose between a natural musical horn and a signalling instrument, then check the tuning, mouthpiece and durability when carried.
