Gretsch Drums Energy 5 Piece HWP 22 Black Drumkit

Gretsch Drums Energy 5 Piece HWP 22 Black — Complete Poplar Drum Kit

The Gretsch Drums Energy 5 Piece HWP 22 Black is a full five-piece acoustic drum kit built for players who want the Gretsch name, Gretsch sound and Gretsch styling in one ready-to-play package. At the centre sits a 22" x 18" bass drum paired with a 14" x 5.5" snare, two rack toms and a 16" floor tom, all wrapped in a clean black finish with chrome shell hardware. This kit ships with the hardware a drummer needs to set up and play, so it works equally well as a first serious kit and as a reliable practice or studio setup.

What Sets the Energy Series Apart

Two design choices make this kit stand out in the entry-to-mid complete-kit category. First, the shells use a 30° bearing edge that lets the head seat evenly and respond cleanly across the whole tuning range. Second, the rack toms use Gretsch's "fast" or "quick" shallow depth, so they sit noticeably lower than standard-depth toms — a real comfort advantage for younger players, students and anyone with a shorter reach.

7-Ply Poplar Shells — The Gretsch Energy Voice

Poplar is one of the most common tone woods in drum making because it produces a warm, balanced voice at an accessible price point, and Gretsch builds the Energy series around exactly that character. The 7-ply construction gives the shells enough stiffness to project without sounding brittle, while the wrap finish protects the wood and gives the kit its uniform black look on stage.

• Shell Material: 7-ply poplar — warm, balanced tone across all five drums.
• Bearing Edge: 30° — even head seating for clean response and easy tuning.
• Hoops: 1.6 mm steel — durable triple-flanged hoops that hold tuning under heavy playing.

Five-Piece Configuration with Fast-Size Rack Toms

The Energy 5-piece HWP configuration is a classic rock-and-fusion layout: a deep 22" bass drum, a flexible 14" snare, two rack toms and a floor tom. The shallow rack tom depths (7" and 8") keep the playing surface close to the drummer, which reduces arm fatigue and makes the kit feel more compact on smaller stages or in home practice rooms.

• Bass Drum: 22" x 18" (559 x 457 mm) — deep, punchy low end with strong attack.
• Snare Drum: 14" x 5.5" (356 x 140 mm) — adaptable size for rock, fusion, jazz and pop.
• Rack Toms: 10" x 7" (254 x 178 mm) and 12" x 8" (305 x 203 mm) — fast-size shallow depths for low, comfortable positioning.
• Floor Tom: 16" x 14" (406 x 356 mm) — full low tom voice to anchor fills and grooves.

Complete Hardware Kit — Ready to Play Out of the Box

Every stand and pedal a player needs to set up the kit is included, so the Energy 5-piece HWP arrives ready to play once cymbals and a throne are added. The double-braced stands provide the stability needed for live use, and the bass drum pedal is fully adjustable so drummers can dial in their preferred beater position and spring tension.

• Kick Drum Pedal: included — fully adjustable with felt and plastic beater sides for tonal choice.
• Hi-Hat Stand: included.
• Cymbal Stands: one boom and one straight — double-braced for stability under heavy playing.

Who Should Buy the Gretsch Energy 5 Piece HWP 22 Black

The Energy 5-piece HWP 22 Black is the right choice for beginners, students and returning drummers who want a complete, ready-to-play kit with a recognized pro-bred brand name. Shallow rack toms and adjustable hardware make it especially well suited to younger players and smaller-stature drummers, while the 22" bass drum gives rock, pop and fusion players the deep, punchy low end they need. Players who already own cymbals and a throne will find this kit a clean, no-fuss foundation, and educators looking for a durable school kit will appreciate the wrap finish, chrome hardware and Gretsch build quality at this price point.

Gretsch Drums — Energy Series Design Details

The Energy series carries Gretsch's visual identity into the entry and mid-level market through signature design touches that appear across the brand's higher-end kits. Each shell wears the classic Gretsch badge and uses Gretsch's mini lug design, giving the kit the same on-stage look players associate with the brand's flagship drums. The black wrap finish and chrome shell hardware tie the whole package together visually, so the Energy 5-piece HWP reads as a complete Gretsch kit from the throne to the floor tom.
