Gouache Paints

Gouache is an opaque, water-thinnable paint with a matte finish. Unlike acrylic, it can be reactivated with water after drying, which makes corrections easier but increases the finished painting's sensitivity to moisture. Consistency affects both coverage and the evenness of an area. Paper that can withstand repeated brushwork produces the best results.

Coverage without a thick, chalky layer

Thin the paint one drop at a time and mix it on a palette. Too much water reduces coverage, while a layer that is too thick may crack after drying. Do not automatically create a light tone using only white; also watch the change in saturation. Paint a larger area continuously while the edge is still workable.

You can find acrylics under Acrylic Paints; the broader selection is grouped under Painting Colors.

You can rewet the palette

Dried gouache on the palette can often be reused, but always wash brushes after use. Do not brush a wet layer over a finished painting without testing. Store it in a dry place and protect it from abrasion.
