Blinders

A blinder is a powerful light aimed at the audience that uses a short, intense flash to highlight an important moment in the show – the build-up of a song, chorus, beginning or end of a performance. At a lower intensity, it can also provide warm lighting for the audience or scene. Your choice depends on the number and power of the light sources, colour temperature, control method and where the light will be hung. Always compare the specific parameters with the size of the space and the rest of the lighting setup.

How many light sources do you need?

For a club, smaller stage or mobile DJ, a two-source blinder, such as 2 × 100 W, is usually enough. Four-source models provide more light and are suitable for medium and large stages where the flash needs to reach the entire audience. At larger events, several units are often distributed across the width of the stage, so plan the complete setup at once rather than each light separately.

LED COB or halogen?

Traditional blinders used PAR36 halogen bulbs, but LED COB chips are now more common. They consume less power, generate less heat and respond immediately. Warm white has a character similar to halogen, and many models can also imitate its typical afterglow, making the effect look natural. Cooler white looks more modern and sharper – choose it according to the character you want for the complete show.

Control and connection

DMX lets you control the blinder from a console together with the other lights and time the flashes precisely. Standalone modes, such as automatic or sound activation, are useful for simpler unattended setups. For smooth dimming and a natural effect, check the dimmer quality and selectable dimming curves. Use lighting controllers and dimmers for control and DMX lighting cables for connection.

Blinders are most often mounted on a truss or stand. Check the bracket, weight and power-linking option when using several units. For safe hanging, you need clamps and safety cables from the truss accessories category, or lighting stands for freestanding use. For frequent transport, lighting transport covers protect the lights.

Blinder, strobe or LED panel?

A blinder produces a powerful, warm flash towards the audience and can also remain lit for longer. Strobes are designed for rapid, short flashes and rhythmic effects. LED panels are used more for broad illumination of a scene or background. If you want lighting effects under UV light, also take a look at UV equipment.

What to check before choosing

  1. Determine the size of the space and the number of units you will need.
  2. Choose the number and power of the light sources according to their distance from the audience.
  3. Choose between warm and cool white, or colour effects.
  4. Check the DMX modes, number of channels and compatibility with your console.
  5. Check the IP rating if you will be using the lights outdoors.
  6. Add cables, clamps, safety cables and a transport cover.
