Darkthrone is a black metal band from Kolbotn, Norway, formed in 1986. Originally starting out as a death metal act called Black Death, the group shifted to black metal in 1991, taking inspiration from bands like Bathory and Celtic Frost. Their early albums A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Under a Funeral Moon, and Transilvanian Hunger are considered landmarks of Norwegian black metal and are often called the Unholy Trinity. Since 1993, the band has consisted of the duo Fenriz and Nocturno Culto. Over time, Darkthrone has expanded its sound beyond black metal, drawing on heavy metal, punk, speed metal, and doom influences, while still maintaining a unique and influential presence in the underground music scene.
