Soul Asylum

Soul Asylum

Soul Asylum is a rock band from Minneapolis, formed in 1981. They first gained major recognition with the Grammy-winning single Runaway Train from their 1992 triple-platinum album Grave Dancers Union. Originally known as Loud Fast Rules, the group changed their name in 1983 and solidified their lineup with Dave Pirner, Dan Murphy, Karl Mueller, and later Grant Young. After years of building their sound on indie labels, Soul Asylum achieved mainstream success in the 1990s, also earning a platinum record with Let Your Dim Light Shine. The band has continued to record and perform, with recent albums including Hurry Up and Wait in 2020 and Slowly But Shirley in 2024. Founding bassist Karl Mueller passed away in 2005 after a battle with cancer.
