TOP 6 mountain bikes of 2022 season

Parameters of mountain bikes

Whether you're just bike beginner or you're switching from road or hybrid bike to MTB, find out what you should focus on while choosing a mountain bike. They can be quite different from one another.

Chosing the right frame and wheel size

The key is to pick the proper size of a new bike. Otherwise you will not get the most of your riding.

The times of using 26” wheels as a standard are long gone and nowadays they're almost entirely replaced by 29”, or sometimes by 27,5” wheels. Consider the riding style while choosing. In general, it is recommended to use:

  • 27,5” for difficult downhill rides to precisely maneuver between rocks and trees,
  • 29” for casual long-distance rides on terrain.

Terrain

Choose your MTB accordingly to the terrain:

  • Trail is comfortable and playful bike for light to medium difficult terrain.
  • Cross-country is made for effective energy transfer primarily riding uphill.
  • Enduro is convenient bike for more difficult terrain for skilled rider that can handle most of the bumps.
  • Downhill bike is made for bikers riding on extreme terrain.

Hardail or "full"?

For biking on common forest trails, hardtail should be enough. You'll appreciate qualities of a full suspension bike if you plan riding on more difficult trails consisting of rocks and tree roots. The bike will feel more reliable, under control and comfortable overall.

Bike weight

While weight is one of the essentials of a road bike, it shouldn't be totally overestimated when it comes to MTB. Riding on dirt paths relies more on durability of the bike.

However, if you have a bike with lighter frame and components, it'll reward you with better flexibility and acceleration.

TIP: Common trick of manufacturers is to mount a premium gear shifter on a bike where other - less visible - components are utterly basic or heavier. Buying a bike with basic components is not a problem. The problem is to pay for it huge sums of money worth the premium and lighter model.

Gears

Superb gear shifting and experiences show undoubted benefits of having just a single front chainring. Nowadays, it is commonly mounted also on more budget-friendly models and the gears are shifted with one hand only. Depending on the price range, the number of rear chainrings can differ. Despite the logic of math, 1x10 is more than 3x7.

Quality of suspension and shocks

The comfort of riding in terrain depends heavily on quality of suspension - front fork, or also the rear shock. Be wise and find reviews of models mounted on your chosen bike. It's usually the fork that make up much of the end price and weight of the bike.

Brakes

Nowadays, MTBs generally come with mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes. They're not anymore considered a luxury and have become more common and affordable.

Since you "brake when you have to", don't underestimate this component. Brakes, more than anything, follow the rule - the better brakes, better you're off.

Price

One of the key criteria while buying a bike is it's price. Considering all the ideas and tips mentioned above, you're now able to find a proper bike for every price tier.

You can also buy cheaper bike with good frame and adjust it by changing other components.

TIP: Put some money aside form your budget for extra expenses. You'll make good use of superior helmet, and also sunglasses, gloves or backpack might come in handy. Than there's also special bike footwear – either sticky snickers for flat pedals or clipless shoes. Don't forget the kit for emergencies – at least: tire repair kit, pump, multitool.
