Richard David James, born in 1971 and better known as Aphex Twin, is a British electronic musician, composer, and DJ. Renowned for his innovative approach and eclectic style, he is a key figure in shaping the intelligent dance music genre, with work that spans techno, ambient, acid, and jungle. Raised in Cornwall, James began his career DJing at parties and clubs in the late 1980s. He gained early recognition with his 1991 debut EP Analogue Bubblebath and co-founded Rephlex Records. His influential album Selected Ambient Works 85–92 received widespread acclaim and helped establish him as a pioneer in electronic music. Throughout the 1990s and beyond, Aphex Twin released groundbreaking albums and singles, including I Care Because You Do, Richard D. James Album, Come to Daddy, and Windowlicker, many accompanied by striking music videos. Following his 2001 album Drukqs, James explored new aliases and continued releasing music on his own label. He returned to the spotlight with Syro in 2014, which earned him a Grammy Award, and has continued to release celebrated EPs since. Aphex Twin is widely regarded as one of the most influential and distinctive artists in contemporary electronic music.
